✨ Want 88 tips to help you grow a thriving bookk ✨ Want 88 tips to help you grow a thriving bookkeeping business? Comment “GROW” and I’ll send you my free Growth Guide.

One of my favorite little “power moves” before a discovery call is doing a quick Google-search. Nothing creepy, just a 10-minute look at a client's website, socials, or anything else I can find that gives me a feel for their business and who they are.

Then I walk into the call with two things in my back pocket:

➡️ Something I genuinely like or admire about them
➡️ Something I’ve spotted that I could help them improve (typos on LinkedIn or a broken link on a website are two examples)

That one-two punch? It builds trust instantly. The client feels seen and feels like I care.

Which was genuine. I actually do care about everyone I have every worked with, and everyone I ever will.

This tiny bit of prep can make you feel more relaxed and grounded and it makes you stand out. You’re not just another bookkeeper or accountant.

You’re someone who is paying attention.
Someone who’s thoughtful.
Someone who is truly there to help.

Here’s some tough love from someone who’s helped hundreds of bookkeepers + accountants grow their firms:

If you can’t say your prices out loud with confidence, your clients won’t feel confident paying them.

I used to dread talking about money. I’d tiptoe around my rates, apologize for what I charged, or just blurt out a number and hope they wouldn’t flinch. It was painful and it almost always led to me undercharging and/or over-delivering (the absolute WORST combo).

Over time I learned, my pricing isn’t just about the number.

It’s about my energy. My beliefs. My leadership.

And the same goes for you too.

Start practicing your rate out loud. Yes, actually say it. Say it in the mirror. Say it in the car. Say it until it rolls off your tongue like it’s just another fact .

Because when you sound certain, your clients feel secure. And when you lead with clarity, they follow your lead.
One of the biggest mindset shifts I had to make as One of the biggest mindset shifts I had to make as a bookkeeper was this:

Sales isn’t about convincing someone.

It’s about connecting WITH someone.

In the early days of my business, I used to fumble through discovery calls. I didn't have much (if any) confidence, and I was often so eager for sales I think I came off as a little desperate.

And you know what they say "Nothing smells worse than desperation."

When did it get easier? When I stopped thinking about myself (more money, more clients), and started thinking about my clients (solving their problems)

Your goal on a sales call isn’t to perform. It’s to LISTEN.

Ask great questions. Get curious about the person's business - their challenges and their struggles. Understand what’s really not working.

Then share how your services can help them get where they want to go if you’re the right fit.

That shift will change everything!

If you’re only reacting to what your clients ask for, you’re doing yourself a disservice. The accountants and bookkeepers who build long-term client loyalty aren’t just accurate, they’re also proactive (ahem - this is "advisory" work at it's core).

Don't be the person who wait for clients to say “something feels off.”

Lead and spot issues before they become problems.
Suggest improvements, anticipate needs.

Being proactive builds trust faster than any polished report ever could. It shows you care not just about doing the work, but about the outcome and success of your clients!

Whether it’s sending a reminder, flagging a trend, or recommending a change in process, it matters. And it's the trick to keeping your clients for the long haul.
Relationships are everything - they are truly one Relationships are everything - they are truly one of your most important assets and are worth your consistent investment.

Business relationships are just like personal relationships, they are built on trust, kindness and time.

Sending a thoughtful gift or handwritten card might seem small, but it’s that kind of personal touch that turns clients into true partners who stay with you for the long haul.

Because at the end of the day, delivering 5 star service isn’t just about great bookkeeping or accounting. It’s about genuine connection. And it goes without saying but the longer your clients stay with you, the healthier your business will be (and your bottom line!).
