HELLO, I’M YOUR

Bookkeepers Coach

Justine Lackey

I help women (especially moms) to build the bookkeeping business of their dreams.

bookkeeper business coach

Hey, I’m Justine!

Lady Boss, CEO, Mother.

I’m Justine. Former New York City club + gallery hopper, turned suburban domestic goddess (seriously, I have chickens in my backyard and everything).

With 20+ years of experience as an entrepreneur and bookkeeper, I founded one of the FIRST virtual bookkeeping companies in all of America. And I successfully sold that firm in 2023 (squeeeee!).

As a mom of 3, I know how important it is for parents to feel present for your children (and yourselves, ‘cuz let’s be honest that one is way harder). I understand the challenges of trying to mold the 9-5 life around theatre classes, sports games, meltdowns, and snow days.

That’s why I know a successful bookkeeping career is the secret sauce to taking your time back. It allows for endless possibilities for you to work for people you like, while getting to spend more time with the people you love…

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a bookkeeping business coach?

The coaching industry is huge these days, and without any regulations and often dubious certifications, my advice is to be careful when it comes to hiring a coach.

If you are a bookkeeper, you should only hire and work with a coach who has experience in our industry (and a LOT of experience).

Coaches can help you in a variety of ways, but the way I help as a bookkeeping mentor and coach is I share the systems, step-by-step processes, templates, emails, and documents I built from scratch.

You have bookkeeping skills, but what I teach is the mechanics of running a business. Those ever-elusive, hard-to-master, and ever-harder-to-implement operation components.

Oh – and I also really focus on cultivating leadership and a powerful mindset with my clients too. These are also crucial for building a high-functioning, super-profitable business.

Who can benefit from a bookkeeping coach?

There are no shortage of jobs in the bookkeeping profession. In fact, many places are looking for full-time bookkeepers right now.

I am telling you this because I am a straight shooter, and owning your own business isn’t for everyone.

And that is OKAY!

Entrepreneurship can be hard, actually, it can be really tough, and that is where a coach comes in.

When you hire a bookkeeping business coach you do three things – you save money, time, and energy. A bookkeeper coach helps you navigate business problems and strategizes with you to solve them together as a team.

A coach can help solopreneurs become leaders and turn bookkeepers into business owners.

My programs and services are designed for people who are ready to take action and build an incredibly successful bookkeeping business.

How do I sign up?

If you are ready to dive in right now, you can find all of my tiny trainings and self-study programs here.

Openings for Evolve Collective, my small group and mentorship experience for 6-7 figure bookkeeping business owners, are extremely limited, and I only open enrollment at select times. If you would like to be considered for this mentorship experience, you can apply here.

If you are ready to join Bookkeepers Business Incubator, Where Bookkeepers Hatch, Grow, and Fly Highly Profitable Bookkeeping Firms, you can join right now.

Is a bookkeeping business profitable?

Bookkeeping businesses can be highly profitable with growing demand and cloud-based software.

But, profitability depends on pricing, marketing, and client retention.

Your profitability will depend on how you price your services, how you market yourself (helllooooo high-paying dream clients), and one of the industry secrets no one talks about…client retention.

Client retention is absolutely essential if you want to build a healthy business. Client retention comes down to providing outstanding services consistently and it’s one of the things I really focus on when I teach my bookkeeping students and coach my clients.

Whether you choose to work with me or not, let me give you one piece of advice right now. You are both the CEO and CFO of your business. Make smart decisions, provide outstanding customer service, and price yourself with profit in mind, and you will be successful. I promise.

What is the best way to learn basic bookkeeping?

Bookkeeping 101 is officially in session! 🍎

If you haven’t already, look into what learning opportunities are out there for new bookkeepers (trust me, there are lots).

No one knows your learning style better than you. So figure out what works best and get to Googling. Most colleges and universities offer affordable bookkeeping programs, both online and in-person. Also, taking an Accounting 101 and 201 class is a good idea—there are many fundamental accounting concepts that you must know if you want to be successful.

Some companies offer certification programs that are perfect for getting your feet wet. Take Intuit, for example, they recently launched their Bookkeeping Professional Certificate program. QuickBooks also has its own set of training and certification programs, which I definitely recommend checking out.

Don’t forget I run a very helpful free FB group, so join me and your fellow bookkeepers there!

Can an accountant or bookkeeper work remotely?

OMG, yes! A little-known secret is that the company I founded was one of the very first all-virtual bookkeeping companies, and that was way back in 2009!

Almost all accounting programs are online now – including QuickBooks, Xero, and FreshBooks. Using Zoom or Google Meets makes meeting with your clients “face to face” as easy as pie. I haven’t set foot in a client’s office for years and years. Oh, and a pro tip – virtual bookkeeping firms can often command a higher price when you are ready to sell your business and exit. It actually benefits you to build a virtual bookkeeping business, in my opinion!
